Dead as a Doornail - Charlaine Harris

Warning: Spoilers below!

Book's summary:
Small-town cocktail waitress Sookie Stackhouse has had more than her share of experience with the supernatural - but now it's really hitting close to home. When Sookie sees her brother Jason's eyes start to change, she knows he's about to turn into a werepanther for the first time - a transformation he embraces more readily than most shape-shifters she knows. But her concern becomes cold fear when a sniper sets his deadly sights on the local changeling population, and Jason's new panther brethren suspect he may be the shooter. Now Sookie has until the next full moon to find out who's behind the attacks - unless the killer decides to find her first. . . .

I closed this book thinking that it wasn't the strongest in the series at all. I did pick up a new phrase, however: Finally, I got so anxious that I took the vampire by the fangs and went over to Tara's table (p. 99). I may start using this expression.

Unfortunately I found myself kind of aggravated with Sookie in this book. Just when you think she has her romance in order somebody new comes in. I am worried that the rest of the series is going to be full of incoming romantic partners for Sookie. I think there have been 6 possible suitors that pop up randomly. I much preferred Bill and Eric! It does keep me on my toes though and I couldn't help but pick up the next book immediately upon finishing this one.

I'm still not sure how I feel about Claudine and Claude. Claude seems annoying and Claudine seems like she will play a larger role later on. I guess the only way to find out is to keep reading!

My love for Bill wavered a lot when he started bringing his date to Merlotte's all the time. He is purposely trying to make Sookie jealous although he was the one who initiated the end of their relationship. That vampire has a lot of nerve!

I still am not sure what I think about Jason being a shape-shifter. That whole aspect of the books doesn't really interest me. I much prefer the vampire world to the were/shape-shifter world.

While I highly recommend the entire series, I can't say that this book is on the top of my favorites list. The previous 2 however were amazing!

  1. Yes, I agree. The pattern Sookie follows as far as her men go can get rather annoying...that and her constant repetition of how good her tan looks against her white Merlotte's shirt and black shorts with black Nikes. How often is she going to repeat that?!?!

Still a good read, for what it is.

  2. I did notice that a lot of things are repeated. For example, every time she has sex with somebody they "explore the topography" of her body.

  3. I completely agree with your review of Dead as a Doornail. Not my favorite in the series either. I think that by bringing in SO many possible love interests, we lose some of that romantic tension. NO woman can be THAT attractive!

  4. I think that romantic tension is definitely lost in having so many potential partners for Sookie. It doesn't feel like she is close to any of them when there are too many to choose from.
